Each year, more than 11 million maritime containers arrive at our seaports. At land borders, another 11 million arrive by truck and 2.7 million by rail. We are responsible for knowing what is inside, whether it poses a risk to the American people, and ensuring that all proper revenues are collected.

Partnerships and Programs

  • Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT)

    CTPAT

When an entity joins CTPAT, it agrees to collaborate with CBP to secure the supply chain, address security gaps, and implement best practices. Applicants must cover key security topics and provide action plans to strengthen supply chain security.

  • National Vetting Center (NVC)

    CBPO on the phone

The NVC is a collaborative, interagency effort to provide a clearer picture of threats to national security, border security, homeland security, or public safety posed by individuals seeking to transit our borders or exploit our immigration system.

  • Container Security Initiative (CSI)

    CBPO Investigates Containers

Through CSI, CBP officers work with host customs administrations to establish security criteria for identifying high-risk containers. Those administrations use non-intrusive inspection (NII) and radiation detection technology to screen high-risk containers before they are shipped to U.S. ports.
